From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny and thus they are considered to have a "sense of humour". The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap, metaphorically, flavour) controlled human health and emotion. A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends on a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery". Q. I will be participating in a Yankee swap party tomorrow, the people here fancy liquor and I wanted to be creative by putting a $20-30 dollar bottle of wine in a much larger box to make it seem like something it is not, as a prank. Would you find humor in this? Much thanks and happy holidays. Asked by Kingsley C - Thu Dec 17 10:08:48 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. That's kind of the point of a Yankee swap party isn't it---I take that to mean what an American calls a white elephant. Best of luck, I've seen quite a few people that do a framed picture of themself, with a gift card hidden behind it. Answered by Mark - Sat Dec 19 20:47:36 2009 What do you believe is the most offensive of shocking type of humor? Q. Some things that we see on television and in everyday conversation seems really offensive. We always seem to laugh, but what are we really laughing at? I know there are many different types of humor and things that people find funny, but what do you think is the most hurful or offensive? Asked by Kyle L - Tue May 1 21:05:10 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I feel that sitcoms show children being disrespectful to their parents is harmful and promotes such behavior. It only makes it harder for parents to instruct and discipline our children. There have been studies done that when one is exposed over and over again to a person they become sort of numb to it, accepting it as OK and then imitating that behavior. Having said that I strongly feel any jokes tinged (meaning slightly influenced by)with racism, or disrespect of marriage mates and children of parents, eventually will just be OK. I mean don't we already see this in society today? Answered by Pandora - Tue May 1 21:17:42 2007 Why do people have such different senses of humor?
Q. I've noticed that a ton of things I find hilarious (to the point where I laugh hysterically), other people don't even find funny. And I don't have an immature sense of humor. Socially speaking though, why do people have different senses of humor? The way they were brought up? Life experiences? For example, I have a smart humor, and find Spongebob and Family Guy hilarious, not only for the intended jokes, but just the whole situation. It's funny to think there's even a situation with all of the characters from Spongebob - you can look at it from two levels - the whole situation, or the intended jokes. I laugh at both, but some people don't understand the situational humor and just the intended jokes, whereas other people like my dad… [cont.] Asked by Ryan - Wed Feb 4 13:12:43 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I be wondering the same thing. as if like they don't understand. but me and you are definitely alike because i have a strong sense of humor. Edit= You must be a little kid or something because i barley find cartoons hilarious but family guy is hilarious. Answered by Rakim - Wed Feb 4 13:19:47 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "humor" Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres. Sourced
