Q. Find the difference between the larger root and smaller root of x^2 - px + (p^2 - 1)/4 = 0. I know how to use the discriminant but am kind of stuck with this question.

A. By discriminant, the difference is sqrt(b^2-4ac). sqrt[b^2-4ac] = sqrt[p^2 - 4(p^2-1)/4] = sqrt[p^2 - p^2 + 1] = 1 Answer: The difference between the larger root and smaller root of x^2 - px + (p^2 - 1)/4 = 0 is 1.

How can I get my parents larger adult dog to Not be Afraid of my puppy?
Q. I just got a small puppy, while my parents have an adult black lab. For some reason the much larger Lab is afraid of the puppy and will bark and run away when the puppy approaches him. Please help.

A. Absolutely do not force introduction and friendship upon other dogs who are not comfortable with each other. Force can cause the older dog to have territorial and protection issues. It's good the older dog is running away afraid rather than scaring the new puppy.Thats a sure good sign he will get use to the puppy over time. The barking is the older dog letting puppy know who's boss. Allow time and adjustment for the older lab at his own pace to become pals with the new puppy. Give them plenty of space, but do not confine one or the other to have the enjoyment of the run around in the house. Eventually work your way into activities that would involve them both. Avoid giving more attention to the other, you want to give them both the same.… [cont.]
