An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, controls its own performance, and has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word organon, itself derived from the better-known word ergon.

In the social sciences, organizations are the object of analysis for a number of disciplines, such as sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. In more specific contexts, particularly for sociologists, the term "institution" may be preferred. The broader analysis of organizations is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. A number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible,

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

How are volunteer organizations primarily funded?
Q. I am thinking mainly of ESL literacy organizations. I realize they have the volunteers for the work, but they also ussually have full time staff, facilities and revenue. Do donations keep these organizations afloat, or do they tap into some sort of government grant handout that supports them because they are serving the community (whatever that means) I would like to know how these organizations work? I'm believer in the follow the money principle but where is the money come from?

How are faith based and non-profit organizations different from for-profit organizations?
Q. How are faith based and non-profit organizations different from for-profit organizations, such as a corporation? In what sense are these organizations similar to each other?

A. A nonprofit organization is a mission-based organization. Similarities to for-profits include that they employ staff, have human resources systems and accounting systems, and want to make enough money to cover all expenses, including salaries, and fund all activities. The difference is that for-profits make their money at least some of their money through income generation activities (selling goods and services). For-profits can also make money through having services contracted (government agencies and even nonprofit organizations sometimes hire for-profit companies to perform certain services). Nonprofits can also make money from selling products and services or contracts from other organizations to provide certain services, but they… [cont.]

Are there any organizations in California who will help low income seniors with moving expenses?
Q. I know a senior couple, (one is completely bed ridden), who rent an apartment. They have been told they have to move soon, but do not have the money. They are on Section 8 housing, but this does not pay for the first, last & deposit to move into a new rental. I was wondering if anyone knows of any organizations who could help with this expense. They live in California.

A. The best thing to do is to contact the Department of Aging & Adult Services office in the county they live in. I have provided a link for you to the county listings for California. I work in one of the county Aging & Adult Services office and I know that here at ours we have Senior Information Specialists that have the names and numbers of many resources in the area for seniors. It sounds like there may be more going on in this situation. With them being seniors, on section 8, and being evicted, they may need to contact a legal aid office also. The Senior Info. worker will be able to give more info. on free legal assistance for seniors also. Also, if one of them is bed ridden, they may want to apply for In Home Support Services, if… [cont.]
